Monika Żyła
Monika Żyła is a musicologist, curator and sound artist, deeply invested in live contemporary and experimental music practices, sound art and global audio cultures. Her artistic, curatorial and scholarly practice is informed by feminist and postcolonial scholarship.
She consistently contributes through writing, publishing, public speaking, and hosting discussions. She published in several cultural and academic journals, including Glissando, Seismograf, Ruch Muzyczny, Dwutygodnik, Contemporary Music Review, Circuit – musiques contemporaines, Norient, and Turba: The Journal for Global Practices in Live Arts Curation. As a researcher, and academic, Żyła is currently affiliated with the University of Vienna, the University of Salzburg and the Berlin University of the Arts.
Together with Andoz Krishnadas, she runs EPYC Studio, dedicated to sustainable and vernacular architecture and design. Collectively, they implemented community design projects across Europe, India, and West Africa, collaborating closely with local communities, and non-government organisations. Recently, Żyła won the artistic scholarship of the City of Warsaw to write a biography of the Polish-American composer Lucia Dlugoszewski. She created and produced a daily podcast series “333for33”. She currently serves as an editor-in-chief for the #43 special issue of Glissando Magazine dedicated to diversity and curating in music and sound. Since November 2023, she has been a discourse curator at MaerzMusik for the research project “Contemplations into the Radical Others: The Life of Lucia Dlugoszewski”.
